Chapter 10 Questions

1. About Simon's death, Ralph says "That was murder" (Golding, 156). Piggy says that "'It was an accident,' said Piggy suddenly, 'that's what it was. An accident.'" (Golding, 157). The only thing that All that Samneric says is that "'...We were very tired,' repeated Sam, 'so we left early...'" (Golding, 158). Ralph thinks that what happened last night was a murder, while Piggy kept convincing him that it was only an accident. Samneric kept saying that they left early, so they were saying that they didn't know what happened.

2. Ralph ended up with the conclusion that it was murder, while Jack kept avoiding the issue and blames it on "the beast." Ralph remembered what happened, "It was dark. There was that-that bloody dance. There was lightning and thunder and rain. We was scared." (Golding, 156). Jack knew what happened, but because of his pride, he still wants to be respected by everyone as chief. All savages had to deny it for him. "'But didn't we, didn't we-?' He squirmed and looked down. 'No!'" (Golding, 160).

3. Jack wanted to prove that he is the new leader, and he expects everyone to bow down for him. "The tribe lay in a semicircle before him" (Golding, 160). Jack also gives out consequences to everyone who disobeys, and it leads the boys to have the fear from him. "I don't know. He didn't say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up..." (Golding, 159).

Jack is the new chief because he is more powerful than anyone else now. The boys listen to him because they fear that something bad may happen to them if they don't obey and listen.
